Pete's responses to the City Council Candidate Questionnaire 2008 of the League of Women Voters of Denton
- I have served on City Council for almost five years, currently as Mayor Pro Tem. I am deeply involved in our city and represent Denton on numerous committees and boards locally, regionally, statewide, and nationally. I have a proven record and immense experience in all areas of our local government.
- The City Manager has the responsibility for oversight of city projects. City staff is charged with the responsibility to bring projects to Council when the amount is $100,000 or more, then council members have to make budgetary decisions. Council members are policy makers and should not be involved in the everyday management of the city.
- I prefer personal communication with citizens to discuss their concerns. I meet face to face whenever possible and respond to phone calls and emails on a daily basis. I have also organized many neighborhood meetings when a group of people are interested in a specific subject. I enjoy talking with citizens and have been very open and available to everyone and will continue to communicate any way possible.
- The primary overall issue facing the City of Denton has to do with managing our incredible growth. The many challenges include issues about transportation, utilities, infrastructure, sustainable building standards, and protecting our neighborhoods. I believe in citizen involvement through both our established advisory boards and commissions and our specific issue committees. Many different city departments are involved and it is vital that council members communicate with citizens and staff to make the best decisions for our future and quality of life.

Pete's responses to the Denton Chamber of Commerce Candidate Questionnaire 2008
Three of the most critical issues facing the City of Denton are transportation, managing growth, and economic development. All of these issues are related to each other and are equally important.
Transportation issues are not simply about mobility, but also about our quality of life and our air quality. As we continue to grow, we need to build new streets, maintain our aging infrastructure, widen I35E, build our downtown multi-modal station before the arrival of DCTA, and continue to expand and develop projects at our airport. I have been very involved with all transportation issues for over four years as Chair of the Council Mobility Committee, member of the Regional Transportation Council, Dallas Regional Mobility Coalition, Tex-21 and NASCO Executive Board Member, and others. I have been influential achieving hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for Denton and I am very committed to continue these endeavors.
Our economic development measures and property maintenance codes need to work together so we can achieve a better living environment for our entire community. These procedures are also about our quality of life and should be incentive based. We need to protect the unique qualities of our different neighborhoods, downtown, and historical areas. At the same time, we need to encourage sustainable, quality developments and projects. In just the last few years, Denton has seen the valuable additions of Granite Business Park, Aldi Corporation, Business Air, JetWorks, Sally Beauty word headquarters, Razor Ranch, new hospitals, many new retail additions and medical facilities. We have more meaningful, knowledge based jobs than ever before in our history and I absolutely will continue my efforts to attract quality businesses to our city and maintain our commercial base.
